New Year Success

by Monica McCullough on January 5, 2010

So here it is the 5 day of the new year – and do you have your goals written down? Have you already taken a successful step towards building the life of your dreams by writing out your goals? It has been my experience that people who fail to build a successful business is because they fail to plan.

Goals are the road map that you will follow in order to arrive at your destination – your success. No successful entrepeneur has ever embarked on the road to success without their map. And so you too, need your map. Lets break it down to some easy steps:

1) Work from the end backwards

What is your big goal? do you want to quit your job by the end of the year? do you have a mountain of credit debt that you want to pay off? lose 30lbs? Or finally build a successful MLM business? Whatever the big picture is write it down and start developing your road map – how are you going to get there – what resources do you need to attain your goal? is it a realistic goal – can I really expect to land a leading role in a full length movie with Brad Pitt if I have no acting experience? Keep things in perspective and attainable and make them clear. One goal one thought. Be very specific – remember that your goal has to come alive for you – you can taste it, feel it, live it, breathe it – that is what will sustain your motivation to keeping working towards your goal.

2) Write in the PRESENT.

Do NOT say for example, “I will have…..” . Remember that if we keep things in our tomorrow it will never manifest in our today. You have to “BE” in order to “DO” before you can “HAVE”.

3) Add a date

Adding a date helps you keep track – a strong step in holding yourself accountable.

4) Add the date to be achieved by.

This is the date that you anticipate the realization of your goal – it is the date that all of your efforts are focused on in order to funnel your energy and labor to successful goal attainment – this is the day that you celebrate!

5) Sign it!

Your signature makes this a contract with yourself. It proves to you and to others that you have made a committment to your success. That you are a business person who doesn’t take this committment lightly.

Here is an example of a well written goal:

I have a wonderful new job

It is located within 30 minutes of where I live
I work for 40 hours a week
The job is with a first rate company. The management like me. They appreciate my skills. The company is successful, modern, totally honest, ethical, well organized and very generous. The company has good products and services which add to the quality of people’s lives.

My employer appreciates my skills. It is a joy to work for them. I really like and respect the people I work with and they me. All the management people like me very much and are impressed with me personally and my work skills. I have a new high speed 4G laptop on my desk.

I love what I do.

I am paid $60,000 per year.

Date: January 5, 2010

Date to be achieved by: May 13, 2010

Then sign it – make a contract with yourself.

Remember – IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN THEN YOU PLAN TO FAIL. Take the time today to plan for your success.
I look forward to seeing you in the winners circle!

Check back tomorrow for a few more tips on setting your goals and moving closer to your goal success!!!

Monica,

Thank you for reminding us how important it is to write down our goals. No map = no destination.

What I started doing was taking a white board marker and writing my goals on the bathroom mirror. I read them and say them every time I am at the sink. This keeps me on purpose.

I am looking forward to more of your posts….very inspriring.

Regards,

~Terri

Great example Monica. I like the details you put in there. I am not that detailed in my plan. I will rewrite them tonight.

I have written a similar article about why it is important to have a Business Plan with this new year 2010:

Great stuff Monica!

If we want to get to Chicago, we have to have a map
to get there.. our goals are our destination.. then
we can begin to create the map to get there.

Having specific goals allows us them to be measurable
and achievable.

To Your Success!

What a great blog. I spend days on the internet reading blogs, about tons of different subjects. I have to first of all give kudos to whoever created your website and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an amazing post. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only a few posses and frankly you have it. The combination of informative and quality content is definitely extremely rare with the large amount of blogs on the internet.

On Wordpress I observed that I will receive a weblog remark notification e-mail an hour after it was posted? As an example, if a person posted a comment at six:00PM, I may have an e-mail come in at 7:00PM. Is that this an computerized wordpress kink or do I’ve the energy to change it?
